Buta dali-Aloo-Kakharu Tarkari(Channa Dal with Pumpkin)

It is a very popular dal dish in Orissa. It is generally prepared when there are guests coming over and it has to be vegetarian food. It goes great with poori. It is nutritious as well as tasty. It has goodness of lentils and taste of pumpkin.

Ingredients:

  1. Channa Dal: 1 cup
  2. Pumpkin: 1 cup cut into chunks with skin
  3. Potato: 1/2 cup cut into chunks
  4. Ginger: 1/2 inch grated
  5. Onion: 1 small chopped
  6. Tomato: 1 chopped
  7. Turmeric powder: 1 tbsp
  8. Panch Phutona: 1 tbsp
  9. Dry red chili: 2 broken
  10. Tej Pata: 1
  11. sugar: 1/2 tsp
  12. Whole cinnamon: 1/2 inch
  13. red Chili powder: 1 tbsp
  14. Ghee: 2 tbsp
  15. Salt as per taste
  16. Rosted Jeera and Dry Red chill powder

Procedure:

Soak the dal for 30 mins
In a pressure cooker heat ghee, add panch phutona and red chili to it.
As the spices stop cracking add Tej pata, cinnamon and let it cook for few seconds before adding onions.
Cook the onions till they turn golden brown
Add the red chili powder and cook for 1-2 mins.
Add grated ginger and vegetables. Fry the vegetables for 4-5 mins.
Add the turmeric powder, salt to taste and sugar.
Add 3cups of water and let it cook for another min.
Add the dal and tomato the cooker. Cover and cook till 1 whistle.
Let all the pressure release on its own. Then open the cooker and put it in medium heat and cook till desired consistency is achieved.
Add the roasted jeera and red chili powder.
Serve with hot pooris.

If you want to prepare it for some pooja just discard the onion and it would be just as tasty as it is with onions. If you don't want to use pressure cooker, cook it in a deep handi , it would take little more time but it would be even tastier. I generally cook it in a hand but using a pressure cooker makes the dish in less than half of the time.

So prepare it the way you feel convenient and do let me know.

Till then Happy Blogging
