Mirchi Bhaji


Mirchi Bahaji is a spicy Indian snack consisting of chili (Mirchi) and potato stuffing, served hot with tomato sauce or occasionally with mint and tamarind chutney. It is very filling for its size.
The mirchi bhaji/bada of Jodhpur, Rajasthan is very famous.
In southern part of India and the stuffing for Mirchi Bajji vary. Everybody prepares their filling as per their taste.
So here is my take.

Ingredients:


  1. Banana peppers: 4
  2. Potatoes: 1 large Boiled
  3. Onion: 1 medium finely chopped
  4. Coriander leaves: 1/2 cup chopped
  5. Red Chilli Powder: 1 tsp
  6. Green Chilli: 2 finely Chopped(optional)
  7. Lime Juice: 1 tsp
  8. Chat masala : 2 tbsp
  9. Salt: as per taste


For the batter:

  1. Besan: 1 cup
  2. Cornflour: 1 tsp
  3. Red chilli powder: 1 tsp
  4. water as required
  5. salt
  6. oil to deep fry

Procedure:
Clean the peppers, make a vertical slit on one side and remove the vein with the seeds.
Mash the potatoes, add chopped onions, green chillies, coriander leaves, salt, red chilli powder, char masala and lime juice and mix well.
For the batter mix all the ingredients for the batter into a thick batter.
Stuff the peppers gently with the potato mixture and keep it aside..
Heat oil for deep frying.
Dip the stuffed peppers into the batter and fry till brown and crispy.
Drain it an serve them with lime, chopped onion and cilantro with coffee or tea.

Eating these reminded me of  my college days when these bahjis helped us through the tense exam days.
